The newest victim caught on our trailcam!

Feb. 2, 2012: Here kitty, kitty

Back in October, we had a mountain lion carry off one of our boer goats. The end of January, we slaughtered one, and hung the hide and head in a manzanita tree about 200 yards from our house, on the "back 40." I set up the trailcam to record what skunks, foxes and other critters might show an interest. About five days into the set up, we got about 50 pics of this lion finishing off what was left of the goat. Experienced friends estimated the lion at 100-plus pounds, and probably a male. The lion spent about two hours at the site. The first pic was triggered at 10:05 p.m. and the last at 11:53 p.m. About three hours later, my queensland, on night patrol, investigated the site (see the next column). Click on the pic for a closer view and higher resolution photo.

Feb. 3, 2012: Hmmm, what happened here?

This series of pics shows our queensland heeler, Vulpix, as he checks out the site where the lion finished off the goat scraps. This is a good way to put a perspective on the lion's size- the queensland weighs about 47 pounds. The first pic was triggered at 3:50 and the last at 4:20. Notice the last pic, where he's "marking" his territory.
